All About Pillows

How do I select the right pillow for me?

The function of a pillow is to help align your head and neck naturally.

If your pillow is too thin or too thick, or if it's too soft or too firm, or if it doesn't offer the proper support, you'll toss and turn all night, breaking the REM sleep cycle, and awake with a stiff neck and/or a sore back and feeling tired. If that describes you, you need a new pillow.

Try this simple test. Lay your pillow over your forearm. If the pillow drapes, it's time for a replacement

How often should I buy a new pillow?

Certainly if your pillow is dirty, stained, torn or if it has an unpleasant odor - you need a new bed pillow.

If your pillow stops supporting you in a comfortable manner or if it has gotten too soft to support you - it is time for a new one.

Washing and replacing pillows frequently will help to keep the pillow fresh.

Natuaral Pillows

Natural pillows are durable and naturally breathable. They can be filled with duck or goose feather or down. Down comes from the breast of the bird and has no quill.

Generally speaking, pillows containing feathers are firmer The more down in a pillow the softer and more luxurious it will feel.

If you like a soft pillow choose one with a high down content.  If you have broad shoulders try a soft down pillow on top of a supportive feather & down one.

Choose a synthetic pillow if you have any concerns about allergies and like to be able to wash your pillows regularly.

What pillows are best for children?

If your child is prone to allergies a synthetic pillow that is easily washed maybe the best choice pillow.  This is filled with non-allergenic polyester ball fibre and may be washed at 60C - the temperature that kills dustmites.

In most cases children won't really use a pillow until they move into a full size bed. Then the pillow should be fairly thin so as to fit their shoulders correctly.

Babies

Babies under 12 months should not be given a pillow!

Pillow Firmness

We all have very different needs when it comes to pillows.  Some of us like to sleep with our pillows folded or scrunched up, others like firm pillows to support the neck whilst sleeping on their back.

Combine pillow thicknesses to support your head. For example, a firm pillow underneath a soft pillow often works well for those with narrower shoulders.

Remember that babies less than 1 year old should not have a pillow.
